What is Rehabilitation?

Rehabilitation simply refers to the process of empowering and aiding the patients in the course of recovery and recuperation from any kind of mental and/or physical illness or injury. It is a stream of specialized healthcare involving a team of expert doctors, nurses, therapists and other healthcare professionals with advanced technology to improve, restore and maintain physical and mental well being of the patient. It helps people to become self dependent through professional diagnoses, evaluation and treatment from illness or disability. The rehabilitaion professional should be highly empathetic and sensitive towards the needs of other as a great deal of patience and compassion is required to interact and treat the patients.

How to Pursue the Course?

Bachelor’s Degree in Rehabilitation Therapy is an undergraduate course, the duration of which is 3-4 years and the basic eligibility for the same is 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as the qualifiying subjects.

The selection is made on the basis of merit of entrance examiinations conducted by the institutes/university concerned. Successful completion of the bachelor’s degree is a necessary requisite for taking up the post graduate course in Rehabilitation and the duration of the same is 3-4 years.

Some other courses offfered for the same are Certificate in Rehabilitation Counseling, Diploma in Special Education (Hearing Impaired, Visually Handicapped, Mentall Retardation), Bachelor of Science (Hons.) Physical Therapy, Bachelor in Mental Retardation, Master os Science in Rehabilitation Science etc. The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) also offers a number of cources in different streams of Rehabilitation Science.

The initial salary of rehabilitation professionals starts from INR 8,000/- to INR 10,000/- which may rise gradually with the number of years experience of the prefessional. After decent years experience, salary of rehabilitation professionals may range between INR 24,000/- to INR 36,000/-.
