What is Computer Engineering?
Computer Engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the design and development of computer hardware such as PCs, laptops, tablets, printers and routers; components such as processors, displays, memory, circuit boards and devices such as smartphones etc. It also deals with the design and development of other systems that make use of computing devices and components in fields such as telecommunication, industrial automation, medical electronics, instrumentation and control. Software systems needed to make all the computing technologies function as per their intended design also form a part of computer engineering. It integrates the fields of electrical engineering and computer science and focuses on the ways in which computing ideas are mapped into working physical systems right from cell phones, gaming consoles, and digital audio and video systems, to intelligent security systems, medical diagnostic machines, and industrial robots etc. Computer Engineers design and implement hardware for next generation computing systems to make the related machine and systems faster, smaller, cheaper and smarter. The main work of the computer engineers revolves around incorporating the power of computing technologies in other machines and systems for use in both the industry and daily life.
How to Pursue the Course?
For admission to the course of Bachelor of Engineering (BE)/ Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Computer Engineering, the eligibility is class 12th with physics, chemistry and mathematics as the main subjects with a minimum of 50% marks. In most cases an entrance exam needs to written either at a national level or a state level for getting an admission. Some of the national level entrance exams to be taken are: JEE Mains, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, VITEEE, Manipal OET, SRMEEE, among many others. The state level exams include UPSEE in UP, MHT-CET in Maharashtra, CET and COMEDK in Karnataka, WBJEE in West Bengal, and EAMCET in AP among others
Some of the institutions offering Computer Engineering as a course include the IITs, Institute of Technology BHU, BITS Pilani, Delhi Technological University, BIT Mesra, International Institute of Information Technology (Hyderabad). Apart from these, the 30 NITs and the Indian Institutes of Information technology in different parts of India are amongst the top institutes for computer engineering.
With the increase in the automation of products and services, the demand for computer engineering graduates has increased and is projected to take a big leap in the next decade. There are ample employment opportunities for computer engineers in both government and private sector and they earn a handsome salary both in large multinational firms and small startups. Some of the major employers of computer engineers include manufacturers of computers, peripherals, mobile phones, consumer goods, telecommunication equipment and systems, defence systems, transportation systems, among many more.
Computer engineering graduates typically have some of the highest starting salaries in engineering. The average salary package of fresher from reputed institutes ranges from Rs 4.5 lakhs-Rs 6 lakhs a year. They are usually employed at the positions of trainees or development engineers at the initial levels and then promoted to levels of design engineer, senior design engineer and then project leader. The salary at these levels ranges from Rs 20 lakhs-Rs 30 lakhs per annum.
