Industrial Engineering

What is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial engineering is the study and analysis of methods, processes and systems used in design, development, creation and delivery of products and services with the objective of improving their quality and productivity. It combines mathematical, physical, social and management sciences with the principles and methods of engineering design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such methods, processes or systems. Its focus is on eliminating the waste of human effort, time, money, materials, energy, and other resources. Industrial Engineers work to create and manage processes and systems that integrate people, materials, equipments and energy in productive ways. Therefore industrial engineering is not just applied in manufacturing industries but also service industries such as healthcare, banking, aviation, retail etc and public utilities.

A B.Tech. course in industrial engineering develops a solid foundation in engineering principles along with a background in management and social sciences. The typical curriculum includes pure and applied sciences; fundamentals of engineering; manufacturing processes and operations; project management; systems analysis and design; modeling and simulation; information technology; management and decision sciences; finance; economics and psychology.

How to Pursue the Course?

To get an admission into an industrial engineering course, entrance exams need to be taken at national and state levels. Some of such exams are JEE Mains, JEE Advanced, Karnataka COMEDK, Manipal ENAT, among others. To give these exams, student is required to fetch minimum of 50% (or 60% in some cases) in physics, chemistry and mathematics.

Some Top Colleges

There are quite a few colleges that provide bachelors in Industrial Engineering. These include some of the IITs ; Thapar University; Manipal Institute of Technology; R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore; BMS College of Engineering, Banglore; National Institute of Engineering, Mysore; GITAM University, Vishakhapatnam; amongst others.

Career Prospects

As the work of industrial engineers has a tremendous impact on the costs and quality of products and services as well as the operations of the organization, they are in great demand across manufacturing and service industries as well as public utilities and other government departments. In addition as the customers and citizens are demanding more and better products and services their demand is only increasing. So they have a number of opportunities across sectors such as manufacturing, construction, retail, transportation, energy, telecom, IT, Banking and Financial Services among many others. They can be business systems analysts, quality control managers, plant managers, operations managers, project managers, management consultants, ; and the list goes on.

Remuneration

Generally, Industrial Engineers start their careers as trainees or junior engineers or assistant engineers. The starting package varies between 2.5 to 3 lakhs and in some cases between 4 to 6 lakhs. The difference is due to the fact that the more reputed institute a student has graduated from; the more salary he or she would be able to get. And with time, as one gains experience with enhanced skills, the salary increases significantly with growth in career.
