Environmental Engineering

What is Environmental Engineering?

Environmental engineering is the branch of engineering that provides technologies and solutions for cleaning, preserving and improving the environment around us and preventing disasters and accidents arising out of human and other activity on the natural and built environment. Environmental engineers assess industrial, construction and other kinds of projects for their impact on the air, water, soil and noise levels in their vicinity. For this purpose they are involved in the project's design, construction and operation. They also plan and design equipment and processes for the treatment and safe disposal of waste material and direct the conservation and wise use of natural resources. A course in environmental engineering combines principles of science and engineering and covers design and development of processes, methods and equipments for pollution control, waste treatment, water resource management, erosion control, recycling, radiation protection etc. It also covers study of soil, water, and air systems and the standards and laws pertaining to environment protection.

How to Pursue the Course?

A student aspiring to be an Environmental Engineer is supposed to fetch a minimum of 50% marks in physics, chemistry and maths in 12th class. The percentage requirement may vary to 60% or more in some colleges and universities. In addition the student may need to write an engineering entrance examination which can be at the state and national level. Some national level exams are JEE Mains and JEE Advanced.

Some Colleges

A B.Tech or a BE in Environmental Engineering is available at only a few institutes as it is mostly a specialization at the masters level. Some of the institutions where a B.Tech or a BE in Environmental Engineering is available are ISM, Dhanbad; Delhi Technological University; College of Engineering, Visakhapatnam; L.D. College of Engineering, Ahmedabad and Visveswaraiah Technological University.

Career Prospects

In recent times, there has been much hue and cry for solutions to deal with impact of industrialization, infrastructure development, construction, population increase etc on the environment. There is no denying fact that the quality of environment is degrading day by day and its effects are being felt in quality of health, climate change, impact of disasters and many other areas that impact people, plants and animals. As a result the demand for Environmental Engineers is also increasing. There are a lot of opportunities for environmental engineers that design and develop processes and equipments for implementing solutions for waste treatment, pollution control, recycling etc. In addition, there are many opportunities for environmental engineers across all industries, in particular those that have high impact on the environment such as chemical product manufacturers, mining, construction, oil and gas; power generation etc. Environmental engineers also find employment in public utilities, regulatory bodies, consultancy companies, urban and rural development agencies, NGOs, international bodies and the government.

Remuneration

The Environmental Engineering graduate starts off as a trainee or a junior engineer. With experience he goes onto to become a project manager or specialist in solutions for a type of industry or environmental issue. The starting salary varies between 2.5 to 3 lakhs per annum This may be higher graduation is completed from a highly reputed college/university or the start is with a private sector company or a multi-national. As one goes in for a specialization in a particular aspect of environmental engineering or gains more experience at work this salary goes up substantially.
