Electronics And Communication Engineering

What is Electronics and Communication Engineering?

Electronic engineering deals with the design and development of components and circuits for development of devices, systems and equipment. Its applications are diverse. They include home appliances, computing, mobile telephony, avionics, medical instrumentation, radio and satellite communication and robotics among many others. Communication Engineering is concerned with the design, development, installation, and maintenance of communication systems. These include telephone exchanges, data communication systems, navigation systems, landline and mobile telephone networks, broadcasting systems, satellite communications, and radio communication in defense and space research.

The modern telecommunication systems and solutions have electronics at their core and use advanced computing technologies. The focus of a course in electronics and communication engineering is therefore on the design and development of devices, systems and equipment and the software that is needed to operate them for telecommunications. However it also covers all the fundamental aspects of electronic engineering and software programming.

How to Pursue the Course?

To become an electronics and communication engineer one has to do a B.Tech or a BE in the field. For this purpose an engineering entrance exam needed to be written at the end of class XII and admission to this branch is based on the rank obtained in the entrance exam.. These entrance exams are either at state or national level. Some of the national level entrance exams to be taken are: JEE Mains, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, VITEEE, Manipal ENAT, SRMEEE, among many others. The state level exams include UPSEE in UP, MHT-CET in Maharashtra, CET and COMEDK in Karnataka, WBJEE in West Bengal, and EAMCET in AP among others.

For taking the engineering entrance exams a student is required to study physics, chemistry and mathematics in class XII and pass class 12th with 50%. In many cases the pass percentage needed is 60% and may be even more.

Top Colleges

Some of the institutions offering Electronics and Communication Engineering as a course include the IITs at Guwahati and Roorkee; ISM Dhanbad; Jadavpur University; Delhi Technological University; Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology Delhi; Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi; BIT Mesra, IIITs at Hyderabad and Allahabad; Apart from these, the 30 NITs in different parts of India are also amongst the top institutes for electronics and communication engineering.

Career Prospects

The field of electronics and communication has become an integral part of our lives today. Going forward we are going to see more and more devices, appliances and equipments that we use in our daily lives that have electronics and communication technology at their core. This is in addition to fields such as defence, transportation, medicine, and space research among others. So the job opportunities for Electrical and Communication Engineers can never go down. There are ample employment options for the graduates in the computer and IT companies, mobile phone manufacturers, manufacturers of home appliances and consumer electronics, broadcasting, telecommunications, aviation, railways and many others. Job opportunities are also there in the government and defence sectors and research and development institutions. Thus from government sector to private sector, the gates for employment are always open for the Electrical and Communication Engineers and that too in quite a large number.

Remuneration

An electronics and communication engineer initially is employed as a trainee or developer and later, with experience goes on to becomesystem analyst, designer, specialised technologist, project manager, production manager etc.The starting pay for is about 2.5 to 4 lakhs per annum depending upon the reputation of the institute one has studied the subject and the type of organization joined. For example, in many multinationals, starting salary can be even higher. This salary may increase rapidly depending upon performance on the job and the quality of experience gained while working.
