Electrical Engineering

What is Electrical Engineering?

Electrical engineering deals with the design, development, manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance of machines, equipments, and systems for generation, transmission and utilization of electricity. The typical equipments that electrical engineers work with include generators, transformers, motors, power-switches, circuit breakers. They also design and develop the instruments and systems that monitor and control them for power generation, distribution and usage.

These activities may need to be done at power plants, electricity substations, industrial sites, buildings, railway networks, among many others. In addition electrical engineers are also involved in the design and development of home appliances, lighting, air-conditioning systems, aircrafts, railway engines, defense systems and spacecrafts among others.

In modern times these machines, equipments, instruments and systems make extensive use of electronic, communication and computing technologies. Therefore a course in electrical engineering covers all needed aspects of engineering in these fields in addition to the traditional topics of electrical engineering.

How to Pursue the Course?

To become an electrical engineer one has to do a B.Tech or a BE in the field. For this purpose an engineering entrance exam needed to be written at the end of class XII and admission to this branch is based on the rank obtained in the entrance exam. These entrance exams are either at state or national level. Some of the national level entrance exams to be taken are: JEE Mains, JEE Advanced, BITSAT, VITEEE, Manipal ENAT, SRMEEE, among many others. The state level exams include UPSEE in UP, MHT-CET in Maharashtra, CET and COMEDK in Karnataka, WBJEE in West Bengal, and EAMCET in AP among others.

For taking the engineering entrance exams a student is required to study physics, chemistry and mathematics in class XII and pass class 12th with 50%. In many cases the pass percentage needed is 60% and may be even more.

Top Colleges

There are many institutes in India providing a B.Tech or a BE in Electrical Engineering. Some of them are the IITs; the NITs, BITS Pilani, ISM Dhanbad; Jadavpur University; Delhi Technological University; BIT Mesra; Manipal Institute of Technology; SRM University; VIT and the list goes on.

Career Propects

We can’t imagine a world today without electrical appliances, electronic devices, computers, mobile phones, internet and communication networks. More and more products are coming up that need electrical energy. Therefore there is a lot of demand for electrical engineers not only in the power sector but also in the fields of electronics and communication. In addition, there is a huge amount of work happening in harnessing non-traditional, renewable and environment friendly sources of electrical energy such as solar power, wind energy, geo-thermal energy and energy from tidal waves. Thus there are many advances happening that are also creating numerous interesting opportunities for electrical engineers.

Electrical engineering is therefore one of the most highly paid fields of engineering. In addition to the power sector, there employment options for electrical engineers in computer and IT companies, manufacturers of home appliances and consumer electronics, broadcasting, transportation, telecommunications, defense among others. These are in both private and government sectors.

Remuneration

An electrical engineer starts off a trainee and can go on to work in research, product development, project management, manufacturing, operations management etc. While some electrical engineering graduates start with annual package of 2.5 to 3 lakhs, others start with 7 to 8 lakhs or even more. This difference is due to the reputation of the institute one studied in and the type of organization joined. This salary may increase rapidly depending upon performance on the job and the quality of experience gained while working.
