Automobile Engineering

What is Automobile Engineering?

Automobile engineering deals with the design, development, manufacture, testing and maintenance of vehicle such as scooters, motorcycles, cars, trucks, buses and even tanks and armored carriers. The technology that is used in modern day automobiles has become very sophisticated. For example, cars now have computer-controlled engine systems and digital display dashboards. So automobile engineering also incorporates elements of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and software engineering.

A typical course in automobile engineering covers the fundamentals of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and software engineering as they apply to aspects of aerodynamic body styling, material selection, manufacturing processes, engines, fuel utilization and efficiency, transmission systems, vehicle dynamics, vehicle electronics, safety analysis etc. The course also provides practical skills in using the machines, tools and other equipments used by the automotive industry. In addition, students are also taught advanced topics such as computer aided design, analysis, simulation and manufacturing.

How to Pursue the Course?

To become an automobile engineer one has to do a B.Tech or a BE in the field. For this purpose an engineering entrance exam needed to be written at the end of class XII and admission to this branch is based on the rank obtained in the entrance exam. Some of the entrance exams to be taken are: JEE Mains, VITEEE, Manipal ENAT, among others. For taking these engineering entrance exams a student is required to study physics, chemistry and mathematics in class XII and pass class 12th with 50%. In some cases the pass percentage needed is 60%.

Some Top Colleges:

There are quite a few institutes in India providing a B.Tech or a BE in Automobile Engineering. Some of them are Manipal Institute of Technology; VIT; Anna University, Chennai; PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore; Sastra University, Thanjavur; Punjab Technical University, Jallandhar; Amity University, Noida; West Bengal University of Technology, Kolkata; Gujarat Technological University, Ahmedabad; Dr. K N Modi University; ITM University, Gwalior and the list goes on.

Career Prospects

India is now among the fastest growing market for automobiles. More and more companies from across the world are coming to India, setting up manufacturing plants here and developing products for the Indian market. In addition, the Indian two wheeler and four wheeler manufacturers are also launching new models. As a result the demand for automobiles engineers is increasing at a fast pace. Employment opportunities are there in multinationals, Indian private sector and defense.

Remuneration

Automobile engineers typically start off as trainees and go on to specialize either in design or development, or production. Some of them may also manage the operations at a maintenance workshop. While some automobile engineering graduates start with annual package of 2.5 to 3 lakhs, others start with about 6 lakhs or even more. This difference is due to the reputation of the institute one studied in and the type of organization joined. This salary may increase rapidly depending upon the specialization, performance on the job and the quality of experience gained while working.
