Design

What is Design?

Design is the process of creating the user experience and specifying the needed functionality and specifications for a product. More often than not the user experience is about the looks, but can also include ease of use, safety, handiness, sturdiness etc. The product itself may be an automobile, a mobile phone, a garment, a piece of jewelry or even packaging for a product.

A typical course in design focuses on helping the student understand the elements and methods of design and develop the needed values, perspectives, sensorial skills and aesthetic sensitivity. Exposure is also provided to sciences and liberal arts to help students understand the relationship of design with human senses and emotions, culture, environment and ecology. Based on these foundations, the students then study topics from one or more areas of design.

How to Pursue the Course?

Students looking forward to pursue a career in design need to do a Bachelor of Design (B.Des. or B.Design) which is a 4 year undergraduate programme. Admission to this programme is based on an entrance examination. In addition students are expected to come for an interview along with a portfolio of their artistic works which are also evaluated. So the aspirant must possess basic artistic talent Which they need to communicate effectively as well.

Though some B.Des courses offer specialization, students can take up a specialization as well with a post graduate degree such as M.Des or M.Design. Some of the specializations awarded in design schools are product and industrial design, textile design, ceramic design, interior design, furniture design, graphic design, jewelry design, communication design, etc.
